Section 37 by Al Cabrón

Music & Lyric: Alan Peters

Alan Peters: Lead & background vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, dobro
Jason Brownell: Bass

Producer: Revenant Ventures
Engineer: Jason Brownell

“Here’s a song dedicated to my late friend Fran. After a really touch-and-go surgery, Neko Case once wrote to Fran that she’d be up and chopping wood again in no time. So here’s an homage to my dear friend, reimagined as a lumberjack, falling her final trees in Trinity County before she heads off to Section 37 — the place in lumberjack lore where shit actually goes right for once.”

Section 37

I walked the log. I fucked the dog. I drank out of a greasy hardhat
I didn’t quit when I got snakebit, but even I know this is worse than that
Put in a load up an old mountain road when I heard them binders snap
Pinned to the ground under ten thousand pounds of Doug-fir in my lap

So Annie, can you hear me now?
Yo Annie, can you hear me now?
I’m going to Section 37
Don’t you dare shed a tear for me because I’m going to Section 37
I’ve seen everything a logger-boy can see, and I’m going to Section 37

I’m a faller. I’m a bucker. I’m a mean motherfucker, and I love to hear that timber crack
P.L. and me musta worked every tree down to the ocean and back
I guess that I shoulda walked them ties when I went down on one knee
But then I don’t know who I woulda been and somehow you stuck around me

So Annie, can you hear me now?
Yo Annie, can you hear me now?
I’m going to Section 37
Don’t you dare shed a tear for me because I’m going to Section 37
I’ve seen everything a logger-boy can see, and I’m going to Section 37

So Annie, I’m going
Yo Annie, can you hear me now?

Long Ways to Chuckawalla

On a platform all alone
Ear pressed against the phone
A tinny voice tells you that it’s time

The rain comes down in sheets
Red light bouncing off the streets
Wondering how you’ll flag a ride

The last train is forty dollars
You’re soaked down to the bone
It’s a long ways to Chuckawalla
So you drop a dime to Al Cabrón

Darling what you need?
What’s your speed?
What gets you through the night?
I got Mendocino Magic Pie
Snow so pure it’d make a penguin cry
Or maybe you just need a ride

The last train is forty dollars
You’re soaked down to the bone
It’s a long ways to Chuckawalla
Slide on in with Al Cabrón

Stainless steel reflections
Best leave that belt outside
Shake hands with the chaplain
Then just say “goodbye”

It’s a long ways to Chuckawalla
There’s no road back home
It’s a long ways to Chuckawalla
So roll on back out with Al Cabrón

Brother P-Touch

Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever gone
Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever known

Well, he can tear out your eyes with a twist of his wrist
You can try, but you can’t resist
So near and yet so far
So close, but no cigar
Isn’t like it happens every day

Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever gone
Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever known

Well, you can look in his eyes while he kisses your lips
He’s there at your fingertips
He’s gonna take you high
To that deluxe apartment in the sky
Isn’t like it happens every day

Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever known

Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever gone
Brother P-Touch, Brother P-Touch, raise your arms
Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever known

Brother P-Touch, lift you higher than you’ve ever known

Somebody Died

Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and left you suffering

Close your eyes and tell me all your sins
I don’t think you realize how deeply you are in it
You can build your life on suffering and lies
Pretty soon the universe will catch you by surprise

Lock the door and throw away the key
All your good intentions come unhinged eventually
You can tell me you know what it’s all about
Pretty soon the universe will turn you inside out…

Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and left you suffering

Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and left you suffering

There might be no light to lead you on
But there will still be people who’ll be sorry when you’re gone
There are no plans behind the hands of fate
The only truths that you derive are those you can create…

Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and made you cry
Somebody died and made you king
Somebody died and left you suffering

Snowball

You think about what it was like before
When everything was so much different
At night your room was dark and yielding
And the drapes breathed like the ocean
But now you’re feeling so much older
You suck your nerve out of a bottle
And the night is dark and lonely
So you sleep with all the lights on to stop the thinking

But I could go anywhere
I could do anything
In my own time
I could do anything
I could go anywhere
In my own time

Suddenly you’re small and helpless
And the snow keeps falling harder
Everything is unfamiliar
You’re somewhere you’ve never been before
And in your hand you’ve got a snowball
And the sky’s getting brighter
And the sky’s getting bigger
You stand alone so small and crying in the snow

But I could go anywhere
I could do anything
In my own time
I could do anything
I could go anywhere
In my own time

Yes I still think about the snow
That’s falling harder
And I know the sea is not as near as it appears to be
I still think about the snow

Now, forever is a good idea
And tomorrow’s just a long time
And the sweat rolls down your body
It’s dark and salty on your mouth

And in your hands you’ve got a snowball
And the sky keeps getting brighter
And the sky keeps getting bigger
You stand alone, so small and crying in the snow

But I could go anywhere
I could do anything
In my own time
I could do anything
I could go anywhere
In my own time
In my own time

Laughter & Forgetting

She’s not from here, she’s from a town
That’s far away across the ocean
And though I’ve never been
I’m sure it’s very lovely
She speaks to me of city nights
Of politics and rock ‘n’ roll there
And the people in her stories
They all speak a different language
And like me she’s from the outside
Then the cards they turned and brought her in
And she came here for the sunshine
But it might not be that warm again

Sitting outside with a glass of wine
She smiles at the sea, how it hangs like it’s painted
I know she and the beach are both out of reach
Then she smiles back at me and says, “Well, life’s complicated”
She captures in her pictures
What I look for in my songs
While she tries to grasp the world here
She knows better than to hold it for too long

And please
Excuse me if I seem
A bit confused
But I’m just looking for a road
That I once used
And please
Forgive me if I seem
A bit unclear
But I’m just looking for a road
That takes me home from here

Well, I’ve learned there’s strength in laughter
But there’s things that I still can’t forget
She saved me once from drowning
Even if I can’t see the shoreline yet

Candle

I have always been someone
Obsessed with great philosophies
Of wax and blood and incense death
The living flesh no breath of life for me

Now black lace curtains ripped aside
The flaming heart is opened wide
A crown of thorns will flare up bright
As stained glass windows catch the light I see

Oh, but there’s nobody
Who I’d rather be next to
Next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you

The marble altar split in two
Its relics scattered on the floor
But bones and burlap
Bits of wood
Are dry to touch
They break too easily
You raise the chalice to your lips
You press it with your fingertips
A thousand martyrs watch from high
So keep the blood but save the flesh for me…

Oh, but there’s nobody
Who I’d rather be next to
Next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you

I have always been someone
Obsessed with great philosophies
Of wax and blood and incense death
The living flesh no breath of life for me

Now black lace curtains ripped aside
The flaming heart is opened wide
A crown of thorns will flare up bright
As stained glass windows catch the light I see

Oh, but there’s nobody
Who I’d rather be next to
Next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you
There’s nobody next to you
Nobody next to you
Nobody next to you
Nobody next to you

Lifeguard

Summer spent
With Laine by the pool
Doing nothing but it was fine
I think we hang out too much
But I want to see her all the time
My eyes are welling up in the parking lot
She’s waiting for her ride
I miss the girl I once was
She grew up to be terrified

Sometimes I wish she never got in that car cause I asked her to stay
But knowing Laine could she watch me melting in my dismay?
In my dismay…

She never knew the right thing to say but I wanted to tell her everything anyway
Now she’ll just be, someone on the edge of my mind
I wonder if they ever knew how hard it was to hide the truth
No lifeguard watching the deep end
When we need it

There was a time I wasn’t sure which way it would go
Would we sit there watching the credits roll?
How some of the best nights turned into the last times, I don’t know
And she never knew that first scene (She never knew that first scene)
We were still running to theatre four with the reclining seats
She said it was a one month thing
It always felt like more to me

And ticket stubs will fade to gray in a few more years
Laine’s already gone
She doesn’t care
I’ll dry my tears
Just realized fears

She never knew the right thing to say and she won’t talk to me anymore anyway
Another thing pushed to the edge of my mind
I wonder if they ever knew how hard it was to hide the truth
No lifeguard watching the deep end
When we need it

It’s just a headache
But it won’t go away
It’s weighing me down as I’m wiping my face
Of the makeup I wore to my friends place
Couldn’t make it through the door life’s too fast paced
If it’s just stress, it’s just summer, then why does it grow?
If this was the fallout, how could I have known?
The memories of us that we can’t recreate
Getting by with a poker face

And I wonder if they ever knew how bad it hurts to hide the truth
No lifeguard watching the deep end
We’re sinking

We’re sinking
We’re sinking
We’re sinking

(You don’t have to say a thing
Just keep me from sinking)

She didn’t ask you to wait so why are you waiting, what are you waiting for?
Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for?
Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for?
Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for?
Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for?

Tainted Reputation

I sent a representative to greet you at the door
Still unsure if I should let you in
I’m made of fears
I’m made of dreams too
Half written poems on my walls all addressed to you
Built it all five years ago
Maybe some things you grow too old for

My apprehension to facing a tainted reputation
All this pressure is placing on who’s mark are we racing
It’s a deal I’m not taking and maybe I should wait inside
This situation is crazy I hate it
Or is it just me?
I’m running out of places that you can’t reach
The real me who is she, the one in the high seat?
Is it the one that I’ve been trying to hide?

But we’re young and so afraid
Of all of the rumors, all of this bracing
But what are we landing on?
And I thought if we had more time maybe the walls would crumble
But I just can’t seem to get close enough to you

All the houses in our little town look the same on the outside
Been sitting on the couch for so long thought it was just me who was inside
Word travels fast when there’s nothing more to say
And everything leads to you walking away
Dear gossip girl, I think some things we’ve grown too old for

What you see in my attachment just a fraction of what I feel
It’s getting late I see you hesitate
The layers start to peel
What they say I know you care
Even if it isn’t real
They just tell me how they feel
Cause everything you said made sense
I wish it did less
I should’ve noticed, I should’ve said less
Is it in my head, my intuition, or the old me stuck on the shelf?

But we’re young, and so afraid
Of all of the rumors, all of this bracing
But what are we landing on?
And I just thought if we had more time maybe the walls would crumble
But I just can’t seem to get close enough to you

Close enough to you
Close enough to you
Close enough to you
I just can’t seem to get close enough to you
